Split Secret Underground

Diocletian aqueduct is built at the same time as the famous palace so that the emperor had spring water for drinking, bathing and entertainment. Speleological Society "Špiljar" is  currently working on enabling access to the underground section of the 1700 year old Diocletian aqueduct!!

It is a remarkable when we consider that the plumbing, the main pump on the river Jadro is over 9 kilometers long, and it continuously monitors the slope of 3%, regardless of the terrain through which it passes.

The ancient aqueduct was used until 1932,since then, it runs only the excess water. The exact route of the water tunnel today is largely unknown, and is encountered by chance every here and there.

"First tours could start as early as next season, and Split will get a unique opportunity to break the monotony, and a little better dig beneath the surface of the city." Tours will start at one of the access place which Romans used for the inspection and maintenance of water supply. At this location we have fully preserved staircase to about 15 meters under the ground!

What a tour it will be!!

CHRISTMAS FAIR IN SPLIT 2013

Second time in a row Split gives you  Christmas fair. It takes place
on the most beautiful promenade on the Adriatic coast- Splitska Riva.

Blue and white (traditional Dalmatian colors) little stands are offering mostly home made products.
You will find all kinds of Christmas decorations, souvenirs and gifts to surprise your loved ones.
Isn't it all about the presents these days:-)

For the picky ones there is a new stand this years, called Vegeton, offers vegetarian food and specially made Mulled wine.

It will definitely be the most popular place in Split till 10th of January especially because of the rich gastronomic offer and of course Mulled Wine, our personal favorite:-)
If you fell tipsy (cause this wine can be very tricky)  don't worry, there is a medicine:
"The detox stand" with mixed vegetables and fruits !

Don't miss to soak up this pleasant atmosphere under the palm trees!

PICIGIN declared intangible cultural heritage!!

Picigin (pronounced "pih-tsih-gheen") is traditional ball game from Split, Croatia that is played on the beach. It is an amateur sport played in shallow water consisting of players keeping a small ball from touching the water.
The most traditional players believe it to be impossible to play picigin anywhere but on the sandy beach of Bačvice in Split, :-))which is considered the game's spiritual home.[4] There is also a widely distributed belief that the only proper garment to wear while playing Picigin is a tight speedo, "mudantine" in Croatian dialect spoken in Dalmatia.
See the jump, they are just amazing:
